It is not only in the area of e-commerce that efficient sorting systems play an important role in the storage and retrieval of goods, primarily due to the fact that a great deal of time and money can be saved by implementing effective processes. Not for nothing is the saying “Order picking starts with storage” used in this regard. At the beginning of the year the intralogistics supplier Kardex Remstar unveiled its sort2ship system, which has been designed to optimize these processes.
You can see how it works in the following video:
Customers can use the software-controlled storage solution to bundle their order lines – which have to be picked from different storage systems (such as storage lifts, static shelving, and carousels) – into one order in a time- and cost-efficient manner. The boxes containing the ordered goods are transported to a high-bay buffer storage area where they are kept in the smallest possible area to save space. When the time comes to finally release the order, the boxes are put together in batches according to customer-specific requirements, such as loading sequence or desired delivery time, and then transported to the packaging station or directly to the shipping station. sort2ship is controlled fully automatically and, according to the manufacturer, helps to increase the order picking performance of e-commerce businesses which have their own storage or distribution centers and handle several thousand order lines every day by up to 35 percent. At the same time, it is naturally possible to equip the storage shelves with additional functions that are especially essential for food retailers, such as chilling or drying systems.
Thanks to its variability this system is particularly suitable for the following applications in the area of e-commerce:
- Supplying retail outlets
- Supplying food retailers with temperature-critical goods as part of consignments suitable for tours (meat, dairy products)
- Buffer solution for sequenced retrieval of partial orders for consolidated consignment packaging (forming of batches)
- Pick-up system at the warehouse for regular customers on a 24/7 basis as a way of enhancing the service provider’s offering
